As an aside, how does one pronounce "Bagration"? I have heard various speakers call it anything from bag-ray-she-on to Bag-rha-tee-on. As it was a Soviet offensive perhaps one of our Russian speaking members might enlighten us?

Operation Bagration got its name from the name of the Russian general of Georgian origin Pyotr Bagration:

He came from the clan of Georgian princes Bagrationi (in the Russian pronunciation, the last letter in the pronunciation of the surname disappeared):
