…The Navy's efforts in directed-energy systems (DES) will pay dividends down the road. In the near term, directed-energy weapons will not have the offensive capabilities of current conventional weapons. However, DES will soon be cost-effective defensive systems which can reliably and quickly defeat enemy missiles, aircraft, and sensors. Investments in DES today will help enhance the survivability of current (and future) platforms, which, in turn, will enhance the ability of the Navy to project power in an increasingly threatening operational environment…
