Of possible interest, I happened upon this image of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll, circa 1644, by George Jamesone, which surprised me as I was more used to the later scowling portrait by David Scougall. The latter always satisfying in me the dark contempt he held for those of an alternative view view – to whit, the Marquis of Montrose. Oops, unable to display pictures. Please use link below Photograph of now lost portrait of c.1644, attributed to George Jamesone, of Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll, formerly at Castle Campbell. The painting, rediscovered in an estate cottage in c.1870, was destroyed in an 1877 fire at Inveraray Castle. Both linked link |

You right click on the image and "open it in new tab." Then copy the tab's URL and paste it into TMP. Voila!
Archibald, 1st Marquess of Argyll and 8th Earl of Argyll
8th Earl of Argyll Edit: Well, that didn't seem to work. Should have though. But the process is what Bill recommends in his FAQ section. Jim |

ColCampbell, frustrating isn't it? But thanks for trying to help. And, for all, the picture referred to on the web page is the third one down the page. Thanks for looking.
(I think my problem was I tried to link direct from the web page instead of opening the picture and then linking it. If that makes any sense?). |

I'm with Timbo, he certainly looks dour |

Slightly less dour, can we agree? When I read (re-read) the Montrose Captain General novels by Nigel Tranter, the older image of Campbell is the one I have in my mind's eye and very effective when I consider his actions and intentions. And I recommend both books if you enjoy a darn good historical story. Happy New Year 2021. |
