…Service Need National Attention, Leaders Say "Military leaders are worried about the shrinking pool of young people who qualify for military service, with some calling on the acting defense secretary to take immediate action. More than 70% of young Americans remain unable to join the military due to obesity, education problems, or crime and drug records. Turning that around should be an issue of national importance, said Rear Adm. Dennis Velez, the head of Navy Recruiting Command…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Allow them to join. Then put them on an exercise and diet regime. That should fix them! The Romans marched about sixteen miles a day and then dug in and fortified their camp every day on campaign. But then again, Romans were Romans! |

Another example of the slow collapse of American society. Reminded of the Pink Floyd song "Another brick in the wall". OK for me, I'll live my life in the Pax Americana, but whoa be to my grandchildren's generation (about 40-50 years). The slide is picking up speed. Anyway, you don't have to be physically fit, all the coming wars are going to be fought by drones and unmanned AFVs right? |

"More than 70% of young Americans remain unable to join the military due to obesity, education problems, or crime and drug records." In a time of war standards change very quickly, so I don't think that number means as much as it seems. |

Oddball has it about right. Never mind the trigger fingers. Do they have dextrous thumbs? ( and a comfy chair ) |

The military is very picky now days. Being mentally, morally and physically qualified is nothing new. They just raise/lower the standards as needed in the past. They have kept the standard high. As new recruits are potentially more mentally fragile in being stressed by mean drill instructors, the services are trying to go with kinder and gentler training. Many benefits that went with military service are being eroded by social programs. Why join the military to get money for college when, for example in my state, society provides a fair amount for very little effort. |
