"The U.S. Navy has released a video of U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Joint Strike Fighters conducting flight operations from the deck of the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island, including a clip of one of the jets conducting live-fire training with its 25mm underbelly gun pod. Makin Island and the F-35Bs onboard, as well as other elements of its Amphibious Ready Group, or ARG, and the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU, are in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. These Navy and Marine forces, among other U.S. military elements in the region, are supporting the withdrawal of American troops from that East African country, which you can read about in more detail in this recent War Zone piece…" YouTube link Main page link
Humm…only 220 rounds of ammunition …. enough for around four seconds to total firing time. If I was on the ground and I needed ground support I would prefer an A-10 with 1200 rounds of ammunition, packing other armaments', and be able to loiter over the battle field for a period of time…

Nah, that's crazy talk. The A-10 Warthog is olde, finished, can't take on first-line opponents, and can't…………………… The F-35 "Coot" we're told IS the future. Too bad the stats, operational capabilities, and close-in fighting capabilities and survivability don't bear that out. |

I'm no expert on modern air assets, but I didn't think the A 10 was ever intended to dogfight. Of course, that being said, neither was the Skywalker or the Mohawk, tho no one ever told them that. |

The A-10 was developed to be a CAS asset. It was designed around the Main gun it carries. it was never supposed to be a dogfighter. The Army loves the A-10, it carries enough munitions to make short work of anything on the battlefield and has a crazy long loiter time. It is a great ground support aircraft. |

IIRC, at least one A-10 has a jet kill marking on its fuselage, ostensibly for an exercise in NV, but I don't know that for sure. Just what I seem to recall having read. The A-10 can turn quite tightly, when it is low and slow, since it has those nice straight wings, so might be able to turn the tables on a zoomie that makes the mistake of getting into a gunfight with a GAU-armed opponent like the Warthog. The latter certainly has the advantage vs. other jet fighters in its main gun, ammo available, and ability to take hits and still keep flying, not to mention that nice titanium bathtub for the pilot. I wouldn't want to go up against a Warthog close up and personal, since the hog seems to have a lot of advantages in that realm. |
