"The 2nd Armoured was formed at Fort Benning, Georgia on 15 July 1940. It was originally commanded by Major General Charles L. Scott, with Colonel George S. Patton in charge of training. Scott was promoted to command the I Armoured Corps in November of that year, which put Patton, now a brigadier general, in command of the division. The Division served with the First, Seventh, and Ninth Armies.

The 2nd Armoured was organized as a "heavy" armoured division, having two armoured regiments of four medium tank and two light tank battalions of three companies each. Along with the 3rd Armoured Division, it retained its organization throughout World War II – the 14 other U.S. armoured divisions were reorganized as "light" armoured divisions, having three tank battalions, each consisting of three medium tank companies and one light tank company. Both types had an infantry component of three mechanized battalions, although the heavy divisions maintained an "armoured infantry regiment" organization.

The core units of the 2AD were the 41st Armoured Infantry Regiment, the 66th Armoured Regiment, the 67th Armor Regiment, the 17th Armoured Engineer Battalion, the 82nd Armoured Reconnaissance Battalion, and the 142nd Armoured Signal Company…"

They were the "other" division when I was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, during the 1970s and again in the 1980s. We always "looked down" on them even though they had a longer pedigree as an armored division that the 1st Cav.

For a while when I was there in the 1970s, the 2nd AD commander was George S. Patton IV. I don't think I ever saw a son so much physically different from his illustrious father as he was.

They are great figures for US unformed tank crews in the Winter on 1944/45. I phrase it thus as I am seeking figures for what I always think of as the 2nd Armoured Division, 2eme DB of Leclerc, ideally in summer rig.

The linked site tells us that US armour and figures are both now abundant. I am not so sure, whether 1/72 or /1/35. Try to find a Dodge Weapons Carrier, an M8 or M20 in 1/72. Try to find an M3A3 or a small hatch M4A2 in 1/35, other than one very early Sherman III. Curiously, even British, obviously German, or even the most obscure Russian tanks are far more readily available.

Deagostini do a nice Dodge 6x6 (pretty sure they do both armoured cars too), S&S models do a fine M20, EWM do both an M8 & M20, Raventhorpe Ready to Roll do a WC-63.

Milicast do all the above plus 2dble tank crew also

Funny and no offense but…I was in the 2nd AD at Ft Hood and 2nd AD forward in Garlsatdt GE….and we used to laugh at the 1st Cav. Of course later I was in the 1st Cav as well so I guess it all evens out in the end…..
