Has anyone heard of, or played these rules? The Viking Forge sells them and has big things to say about them but it is lacking in any sort of detail. Is there anyone who is familiar or has played these that can comment on them? I found 2 older posts on these but they were simply looking for them and no actual comments on how they play or whether they even liked them.

Played them once waaayyy back in de day. Not bad, a little more involved than what I'm willing to deal with now. You could see a touch of Fire and Fury in the basic mechanics from what I remember.

If you're looking for a set of TYW rules I like the Liber Militum Tercio set is pretty fun. Doesn't fry the brain. : )

Played them once at a convention. They were OK, time has passed that set by IMHO.

Our local group plays Great Italian Wars using Simon Miller's To the Strongest rules. He has an ECW set too which has modifications for Ren eras.

I played them quite a bit several years ago. Largish units (average about 36 figs in a 'brigade' the basic movement unit). Uses d10's. and marker chits. Casualties per figure. Fairly involved. Like mad monkey says, shades of Fire and Fury.

I played them several times at Cold Wars/Historicon in games run by the author, probably in the mid-late 90s or early 2000s. I have a copy in storage. I remember them being a fun game using d10s and large units. Not sure how they would hold up nowadays.

Sequence of Play – Move/Fire, Leader, Close Action, and Command Control (there are several steps in each phase particularly the Close Action)

For 15mm – (double for 25mm)
Scale is ground 1" = 40 yards
1 Figure = 50 men
Time Scale is 30-45 mins a turn

Formations allow for Column, line (pike in middle, shot on sides), square, wedge, Spread and Artillery – Examples of Tericos are also shown

There are Army lists and a few scenarios – at the end 1 page rules reference, 2 pages covering melee combat, modifiers etc, 1 for fire and 1 for operations

There was also an expansion for it – For God, King, Pulk and Orta which adds some optional rules, Advanced Rules, Provides more army lists, an Errata (it was a pdf and not bound)

I use it on occasion

I was a playtester. Doug knew his stuff about the 30YW. He was inspired by Fire and Fury. The rules played out pretty well. 3 to 4 hours for a game. IIRC. I still own them.

Thanks

John

Played years ago, there was another rule set mechanics also used besides Fire and Fury but I cant remember the rules. (Immature artists copy.. mature artists steal.) A decent rules overshadowed by time and wargaming advances and/or fashion. A little too high a level tactically for my tastes. I another words felt like a brigade game rather than a regimental game. If you like fire and fury this could be the rules for you.

Well now I am in a quandry, I LOVE the Thirty years war and have a huge amount of 1/72, 28mm and 10mm for it, but I strongly dislike fire and fury, even though it was so popular my entire group gave it thumbs down, we went with Johnny Reb II for the civil war. Are the rules suitable for larger(ish) battles?

colonial nic26 Dec 2020 3:26 p.m. PST

If you dislike fire and fury then I would recommend you dont use DS3. Having cast around for many years for the perfect big battle 30YW rules I actually settled on Armati! It always provides a close and exciting game within a couple of hours, and has a decent selection of 30YW army lists.

colonial nic26 Dec 2020 3:27 p.m. PST

Oh there is a 30YW version of Volley & Bayonet that might be excellent too, but I haven't played it myself.

I'm with Mad Monkey 1 Tercio by Liber Militum; I have been playing a Imaginations campaign for the last two years using them. Easy to understand, fast playing but plenty of detail. Here is the link to our campaign epicureanwars.blogspot.com

Meant to say I have a second copy of the rules if you need a set

I have read and heard about Tercios. I ordered a copy of the rules. On Military Matters carries the main set with a supplement that adds Eastern, ECW and more 30YW armies. They are definitely a Big Battle set. Balagan on the net has a homebrew 30YW set which also looks good.

Thanks.

I'd be interested in getting hold of a copy of " Dutchman, Spaniard, Switzer, Swede" if anyone wants to sell, or knows where to get one? I'm in the UK.

Mirosav30 Dec 2020 12:02 p.m. PST

The Viking Forge has them listed for sale, though I would email them first to make sure they actually have a copy.

There is also a copy on ebay:
