So back around 1995, I bought a bunch of Grenadier's plastic, injection molded, Dwarves: X-bowmen, Great Axemen, and Spearmen. Later on, I purchased some Ral Partha Dwarven Ram Cavalry. Many years later, around 2005, I bought a set of Old Glory Female Dwarven Warriors, and Dwarven Boar Riders… They have all, finally, emerged from the painting queue, ready for the tabletop! It's a very good thing Dwarves live for four centuries -- they have patience bred into them! Army photo link; Ram Cavalry with Boar Riding Leaders link; X-bowmen link; Great Axemen link; Spearmen link; Female Dwarf Infantry link. The army is 74 figures strong. These are my Mountain Dwarf Army. I recently (2019) purchased a couple of boxes of Caesar 1/72 Dwarves, which are smaller -- these will be my Hill Dwarves Army, when they are finished. I have already begun painting these bad boys, so they will not languish for nearly three decades, like their Mountain cousins. I recently purchased a Mage Knight Chariot, with a Dwarf figure as a Driver, standing on the pulling beast's harness. I will glue two Hill Dwarves in the carriage portion, once they are painted. They, like Gimli, required a box, to see over the front rail of the chariot! More on this, later, in a separate topic… I am an army painter. I paint to the GEtGW standard: if they look good at arm's length, that is all that matters, to me. I went through a couple of ideas on the basing: some have 'grass', while others have rocks. I waffled between basing for outdoors campaigns (grassy basing), versus underground campaigns (rocky basing). Not sure I will change them… I changed the base sizes, mid-basing on the Ram Cavalry. I will likely trim the larger bases down to match the smaller ones. For my 2e BasttleSystem games, basing sizes are very important. What can I say, but that I had a schizophrenic moment. LOL! I am trying to follow Gary Gygax's 1977 1e AD&D Monster Manual descriptions and sizes, but I just could not limit myself to grey, white, brown, and black hair, for Dwarves. I thought the red hair on a Dwarf would look good. In my opinion, it does. I likely made too many redheads in the Army, but I really like that hair color for Dwarves. Thank goodness it is all fantasy! Cheers! |

Nice army! Aren't those Ral Partha Dwarven ram riders? I have been priming up my old Dwarven figures. I plan on using them for the One Page Rules 'Fantasy regiments'. My Lizardman army got thumped by my sons Orcs and Goblins last time. Revenge!!!!!! My High Elves are actually closer to being ready. I love large fantasy games! I also love those 1/72 figs. They are just great! Thanks Sarge. I always enjoy your posts! John |

Congratulations. I have one of those Grenadier boxes of Dwarves still waiting to be painted too! |

25 years in the queue, this and dwarven parenting is why they are so tough.

John Leahy, yes, those are Ral Partha Dwarf Ram Riders. They are still available from Ral Partha Europe, I believe, if not Iron Wind Metals, here in the USA. Like I said, I have two boxes of Caesar 1/72 Dwarves, which I will use as the smaller, Hill Dwarfs, of AD&D rules. Looking forward to finishing them! I'm currently painting up 32 Dark Alliance Half-Orc Pikemen figures. I am painting them up as Hobgoblin Pikemen figures, for my Hobgoblin Army. I figure only Hobgoblins would have the discipline to field veteran Pikemen, fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, three ranks deep, wielding a 20-foot spear, and no shield! I hope to finish them this week. They've been in the queue for around one year. Bashytubits, "Sounds like Elf talk to me, Boy!" LOL!!! That is perfect for a Dwarf! Thanks for sharing! Cheers! |

Hope you get a game in with them soon! |

Albus Malum, I will be putting together a game with them, in February. I want to play out a Dwarven attack against a Hobgoblin wooden fort, in a woods. The scenario came out of my 2e AD&D RPG, back in the late 1990's. I have the Hobgoblins, the fort, and a new gaming table to break in for mini's gaming. The Hob'ies have dug spiked pit traps, outside of their fort, covered them with mats. I plan to have the Hob'ies Infantry march out, form ranks, and prepare to be charged by the Dwarven Ram Cavalry… It will be a nasty surprise for the charging Dwarven Ram Cavalry! But, it will be a glorious game! Plenty of death, mayhem, gnashing of teeth, etc. I love games with carnage, mayhem, and disgruntled, angry players. >;-) It will be a fair, but very challenging, game for all. My favorite, back-handed compliment on my scenario designs, are when the players -- on both sides! -- cry, "There's no way we can win this… It's not fair." I love hearing that, from both sides! Cheers! |
