"At dawn on 25 April 1915, Australian troops took part in the allied invasion of Turkey's Gallipoli Peninsula. Something of a sideshow to the major action on the Western Front, the broader campaign was designed to open up the Dardanelles, allowing safe passage to the Royal Navy in the hope that its appearance outside Constantinople (Istanbul) would force the Ottoman Empire to surrender, on pain of having its capital reduced to rubble. An earlier attempt to force passage of the Dardanelles using ships alone had failed.

Despite the fact that the Turks were thus clearly forewarned of the Allies' intentions and so could dramatically improve their defensive preparations, it was deemed worth another effort ― this time with troops…"
