The editor of Verlag Militaria published a recommendable book about the Prussian general Hans Ernst von Zieten, although also starting his career in a Hussar regiment not the famous Zieten of Frederic the Great. The book contains the whole military history of the revolutionary and napoleonic wars with relation to Zieten, who is rather unknown. The book has lots of rare and interesting images, lots of them showing the evolution of the Prussian army (most of the images come from ASKB collection). I wrote a review in German at link and more information could be read at the English site of the editor (with some sample pages) at link Greetings from Berlin Markus Stein |

Interesting Markus, >>- unknown Prussian commander I'm afraid I've known about the man (with an 'h'), not the details, in most English language essays since I began my interest in the history and revolution of Europe over 45 years ago. Perhaps it was just in Germany that he's been forgotten for so long. The close ups of the medals are stunning! regards dave |

Dave, of course everybody concerned with Belle-Alliance aka Waterloo knows Zieten, but in Germany his uncle and name-giver of the famous red hussars (the Prussian prince Friedrich Karl wore the uniforms of this hussar regiment during the Franco-Prussian war) is more popular. And indeed, the images of the medals are impressive – but also the other images chosen to show the Prussian army and its wars. Greetings from Berlin Markus |
