As the war escalated, the need for up to date information regarding Governmental decisions and Military movement were crucial for both Armies. Rumour control was in overdrive.

Misinformation, disinformation, exaggeration, part truths and fairy stories were being passed around deliberately to confuse and disrupt both Armies' information gatherers and spies…"

From my reading of the period many of the exaggerations and fairy stories originated with Pinkerton's agents. They did not serve McClellan well during the Peninsula campaign.

That is true. The exaggerated reports of Confederate troop strengths came from Pinkerton's agents.

He did save Lincoln from being assassinated in Baltimore on his way to his inauguration, though.
