Just watched this. Well worth the time. Quite balanced and apolitical to boot.

I will, read Hell in a Very Small Place as a very young kid and think that cemented my political outlook. Couple years ago now finally bought a copy to have permanently.

Read "The Last Valley".

Fall's work is very good, but he was limited by the information that he possessed. "The Last Valley" has the advantage of Vietnamese records being available now.

The French Indochina war is a subject I have wanted to do for a long time. I bought some Eureka samples and they are beautiful models. But all of the French are European. Large numbers of Vietnamese served with the French as well as colonial forces from Africa (Senegal and Algeria). But one day I will take the plunge.

It is a great film.

Very impressive. I remember the TV coverage of the battle at the time. Very depressing.

Any recommendations where you can buy the film with English subs in Europe?

Hell In A Very Small Place and Street Without Joy are both great reads on the topic.

Falls book is a classic, but there are other accounts worth reading.

Jules Roy, The Battle of Dien Bien Phu is a mix of political and military analysis.

Howard R. Simpson, Dien Bien Phu, The Epic Battle America Forgot is also a mix of political and military analysis, this time from the US point of view.

Martin Windrow, The Last Valley, is great military read and a personal favorite. His Osprey Elite on FFL Paras is also very good.

Ted Morgan, Valley of Death, is also highly readable and makes use of some recently declassifie archival material.

Kevin Boylan and Luc Olivier, Valley of the Shadow, is a book I think most wargamers would like. It is a more balanced account of the battle making extensive use of Vietnamese sources. I picked this one up recenlty and have been slowly working my way through it. Great photos and maps, extensive tables covering weapons, ammunition, troops strengths througout the seige from both sides.

Have read all of the above, highly recommend the last three listed.

Others are great, just new info available to writers after 65 years.
