My hometown had a large emigre population of Latvians and Estonians. As I got to know some through chess club one was missing his thumb and I asked Anton how it happened. He hesitated but eventually said fighting Russians. He never confirmed it, but hinted he was part of the SS formation. May he rest in peace.
