… British army Challenger 2 tanks

"According to information published by the BBC website, the British army is looking a number of options to modernize its fleet of Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) Challenger 2. The British MoD (Ministry of Defense) options could include the acquisition of German Leopard 2 MBTs or the modernization of Challenger 2, currently in service with the British army…"

It's been an option to replace for over 30 years, as has the M1.

The only difference now is that UK has no tank manufacturing capability left, so we can't make anything ourselves.

But UK are getting rid of tanks now anyway so why worry?

Dune buggies with HMGs and a quad ATGM launcher seem to be the way forward to me.

Perhaps add on a 20mm cannon, if you really want some firepower vs. lightweight targets.

With Drones being so effecftive ,will tanks still be viable?

I'm reminded of the event in Operation Torch where US troops landed to seize harbors in French African colonies. Things went great til the H-35 tanks showed up. US had really no AT weapons other than a few grenades. When those were gone, surrender was the only option.

Nobody would consider a H-35 tank as one of the better tanks of W.W. II, but if the other side doesn't have any AT weapons (grenades or drones) and your side has tanks, well……

Your side wins.

The G35 was very heavily armored for its size, so US 37mm AT guns were if limited use, as well.

Challenger 2s are pretty ancient, Leopard 2 would be the obvious choice for replacement if we wanted to.

I think the MoD is looking beyond the use of tanks now for the future. They did get it right with battleships after all.

Leopard II was an option, as was abandoning tanks altogether, but the decision is already taken to upgrade the C2s with a new turret with the Rheinmetall 120/155.

Leo 2s are about the same age, if not older than the Challey's, IIRC.

Of course, there have been upgrades to the German tanks, so…….

I suspect the Challengers could be upgraded too, though if you are giving up your MBTs it does seem unlikely to now buy German ones, at least until someone runs heavy armor through The Chunnel, or across the Channel on LSTs.
