… ill-tempered USS Wisconsin

"It was one of the largest warships ever built by the United States Navy- with enough firepower to level a city, a hand in three armed conflicts and over six decades of service life.

Despite being part of a dying breed, the USS Wisconsin (known as "Wisky"), was a legend that stood out from many battleships, particularly when it came to dealing with incoming fire.

Named after the state of Wisconsin, Wisky was initially planned before the war, but would not be ready to go until Dec. 7, 1943, the second anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor…"

It was the largest Battleship built by the US. The largest warships in the USS navy are the carriers with the latest the Gerald Ford being close to 100,000 tons. The Iowa class are less then half that tonnage (42,000 tons?)

Interesting.

I didn't know one participated in the Gulf War.

I would have guessed Lebanon.

There was one photo during the Gulf War of Wisconsin and Missouri in line-ahead formation firing at land targets. Last time that ever happened.

I've got pictures of the Wisconsin and Missouri from during Desert Storm.

The story I heard was that they were using early drones for range finding / BDA for the Battleships in the early stages of Desert Storm.

One of the drones crashed at the Iraqi base it was surveilling, but the operators were still getting telemetry.

Supposedly, the Iraqis knew exactly what the drone was doing there, and the operators started getting photos of Iraqis waiving white flags in front of the drone camera.

Makes for a funny story, but I've never been able to find out if it's true.

I don't know about a crash, but the surrender happened at Faylaka Island off the coast near Kuwait City.

That must have been the one I heard about and the part about it crashing got added by the grapevine.
