A favorite set of Napoleonic rules of mine, I'm looking at rekindling FVTW in our local club…….would love to hear from fans of William Keyser's outstanding rules. Is there a current forum or discussion group since Yahoo bit the dust?

Always wanted to try them but could never talk my group in to giving them a go.

They are daunting initially, but once you get the concepts down, Using the cheat sheet booklet Makes for a smooth game. I played a couple games with the author at Historicon years ago and it was a great experience both times. …..and we had some players brand new to the system.

I still play them when I can find an opponent.

Where are you located Rick?

Madmac64, I am just outside Philadelphia…

What are the basing conventions? This is always what makes trying new rulesets so daunting.

Madmac6426 Nov 2020 1:02 p.m. PST

Reasonably flexible basing…….for example for 15mm figures, you can pick a Double rank ground scale using Napoleon's Battles basing (1" = 50m) or a Single rank scale using Empire basing (1" = 33m)……..the rules do count figure casualties, but it's not incredibly strict on basing requirements….although there are recommendations.

I love them. Great set for learning how the Napoleonic Wars were fought and how the armies evolved. About to move into the new house with a dedicated hobby room capable of fitting enough table space to play these rules with 15mm.

Man, that's good to hear that there's a few of us left out there…….

Madmac, yes I still play FVTW quite often as the only Napoleonic rules I use…..in fact I spent considerable time (as pre-pandemic I used to travel quite a lot) developing a very detailed Microsoft Excel based play aid that includes all of the tables in the rules, and which effectively automates all of the game functions and calculations other than physically moving the miniatures around.

I found it speeds up play enormously. Happy to share the play aid with anyone still interested in FVTW. Ping me offline.

Hey I still play them, go figure. Am working on reediting them and have done some errata and some minor changes.

Any one who would like a copy of the errata let me know.

My plan is to relaunch them as pdf some time later this year, along with Age of Bonaparte, which is a larger scale set of rules for the period. Units are brigades.

Would love to get the official errata…..ill email…..introducing to our club this week.

Sorry I did mean next year for some reason I am trying to forget 2020. oh well.

My plan is to reedit and release From Valmy to Waterloo as a pdf late 2021, and also hope to do the same with Age of Bonaparte.

Really looking forward to both !

William, do you have any update on the re-release of the rules ? Would very much be interested in an updated set whatever the cost.

Arlecchino572710 Jan 2022 2:22 p.m. PST

Also Madmac64, I never saw any response to your original posting here about any FVTW forums….I still play these rules a lot (played the Baumersdorf scenario from the Compendium over Xmas), and would love to have a place to correspond with other fans of these rules. Is it possible to create a folder on TMP just like Empire has ??

Really enjoyed FVTW. One of the few rule sets I dug out of the rubble after our house fire 10+ years ago and kept. Ended up rebasing all my FVTW figures for ESR. I would definitely purchase a copy of Age of Bonaparte & FVTW when available.

Chad4712 Jan 2022 8:05 a.m. PST

Was the pdf ever released?

WKeyser12 Jan 2022 9:41 p.m. PST

Hi It is amazing how one can get distracted but I am still working on them and working on my Waterloo/Ligny armies.

No a pdf has not been released. I do have a FAQ sheet with lots of minor updates and a change to artillery. It now becomes less effective it just fires continually. If any one would like a copy please send me an email wkeyser at aol dot com

Thanks for the update William….I think I have the latest version of the errata & questions file. I actually sent you an email recently with some rules questions, as I am still tinkering with my automated Excel tool for handling most of the functions in the game and speed up play (a bit of a labour of love). Sorry for the trouble, but I would be in your eternal debt if you could find the time to craft a response. Kindest Regards, Simon
