I just got news of Foundry's Christmas Special. To be honest, not a particularly great deal (at least compared to the past.) As I looked through their site again there are few models I'd like to pick up at some point but the prices are sky high, even with a discount. ₤14 for a pack of 8 figures. Perry charges ₤7.50 for a pack of 6. Gripping Beast is in a similar price range. The thing that surprises me about Foundry is that most of their figures come from ranges that were developed in the 80s and 90s so it is not like they have huge design costs to meet. Anyway, just a bit baffled.

Another nice thing about Perry and GB is that they remove the VAT for overseas customers. Considering that every time I order from Britain I risk Canada's VAT when the package cross the border. Who wants to pay the VAT twice!

The obvious solution is to not buy them. Problem solved.

Well as soon as some one else makes an extensive range of Darkest Africa miniatures I can stop buying Foundry. In the end if you want something enough you suck it up and buy it.

For some reason Foundry is the manufacturer whose pricing is perennially complained about. Most Foundry infantry packs are 12 pounds for 8 figures, which makes them more expensive than Irregular or Perry, but less expensive than Iron Duke, Empress, Artisan, Brigade, Eureka or Redoubt. While they are not cheap, they are not an overly expensive outlier, either. They are priced well within the range of other manufacturers.

I came in to TMP 15 or more years ago, and Foundry pricing complaints were all the rage then. I was one of the loudest and most obnoxious.
Back then, they went for roughly $3.00 USD each in an 8-pack.
Now, 15 years later, they're roughly $2.80 USD apiece in an 8-pack. grin
Yeah.
I don't "need" anything more, but somehow the outrageousness has mellowed a bit.
The last time I ordered enough for an AWI regiment, the figures were fine. I don't see how the quality can be improved upon. There are some unique figures in that style I would like, like Hessian mounted jaegers, but Foundry stopped producing new AWI figures when the Perrys left. But if they did, and I needed them, I'd pay the few extra bucks.

I've gotten over being outraged by Foundry prices. They have plenty of cheaper competition.

I bought a lot of Foundry twenty years ago I don't remember it being $3 USD a figure back then.

Foundry is now mostly ₤14 per pack 79thPA. Artisan is ₤6 for 4 figures so a bit cheaper. They sell their figures in regiments as well at a better price. Empress is ₤7 per pack of 4 but two things need to be mentioned. They are truly the cutting edge of 2020 figures that are superior to pretty much everything else on the market. And also, you can buy bulk packs the move the price ₤1.50 per figure which makes them a bit more affordable.

With the above said, this is more an expression of bafflement than a gripe. I agree gisbygeo that ultimately we can chose to buy or not. That is not really the point I am raising. I don't really understand their approach.

I see you are in Canada. It appears that you are paying different prices than US customers.

I DO remember Foundry asking $3.00 USD per figure. I never paid it. grin
And this was back in the insane times when the owner would withdraw ranges for years at a time.
He was on record as seeing it as his duty to raise figure prices universally.

I gave up on them a few years ago when they wanted to charge me the same price for 10 Masai spears as for a whole pack of figures.

I've also had multiple rude customer service experiences with them so I've taken my money somewhere else.

I do wish them well as they do have nice ranges.

Maybe if they ever get around to digging out all those old Citadel molds they talked about…

Their approach is the same as anyone else: They sell their figures at a price they think is fair, and the market decides if they are correct or not. Since they are still selling miniatures, they seem to be judging well enough.

If you actually want a useful discussion, write to THEM with your concerns: They won't care, because your complaint is essentially 'I don't want to pay that much.' You have no complaints about their quality or selection, you just want them cheaper. (This is not an unreasonable desire, but everyone wants everything cheaper – if they are the buyer)

Foundry aren't 'cheap' but they aren't awful either. If you don't like the prices, buy something else.

Somehow I just paid 12 pounds per pack with free shipping over 100 pounds. figures were very nice and arrived in less than two weeks. Nobody else made those particular figures so I didn't have much choice and free shipping is worth a bit more than VAT.
