I do wonder how much choice he had in that. "We need volunteers for the Local Force. You, you and you." College deferments were not accepted by the NLF (unless you were the offspring of senior cadre in the North of course) |

That's the tragedy. Neither side were 100% volunteers. ARVN were almost all conscripts and desertion rates were thru the roof. PAVN/NLF also often deserted or 'rallied' in what was called the Chiêu Hồi program. Some would then desert back after a spell. |
