The Military Officers Association of America just released this list of five vintage military history books one should add to one's collection. I thought it was interesting. link The books are: The Complete History of World War II (1947) Iwo Jima: The Dramatic Account of the Epic Battle that Turned the Tide of World War II (1965) Away All Boats (1954) [admittedly a historical novel but written by a participant in the Pacific islands landings] Battle Studies (2013) [a reprint of a classic by Ardant du Picq] Brave Men and Great Captains (2012) [another reprint] The topic is now open for further discussion. I have only du Picq's "Battle Studies," but treasure it. It's short, pithy, and helped completely upturn my childish views of what I thought happened in battle. Should be read and absorbed by wargame authors as well as general military history buffs. Price is no excuse for not adding it to your shelf, as shown here: link TVAG |

There's no point. All military history published prior to 1970 to choose from? I'd be at it all day. Just a note, though: he includes Away All Boats but misses Twelve O'clock High and Run Silent, Run Deep. |

I quite concur with TVAG's evaluation of du Picq's "Battle Studies" – an essential reference on the behavior of men in battle; I don't care what period one is studying. B |
