The conventions of warfare in the 18th and 19th Century were somewhat different from modern conflicts. An officer taken in uniform in the circumstances alluded to would be treated properly and probably eventually exchanged. While in captivity, there seemed to be no requirement to keep great secrets and information could be exchanged affably as one gentleman to another. Of course if you were French and captured by Spanish guerrillas or Russian peasants in 1812 it was a different matter … |
