I am currently revisiting my Portuguese brigade as part of my Peninsular armies for the Salamanca campaign. There are a couple of things I am trying to track down but the information is sketchy and in places contradictory. Therefore, I have a few questions that I am hoping someone can help me with. 1. The 21st Line Infantry. Did it, amongst all the regiments, only have one battalion? 2. Did each battalion have a pair of colours? If not, how were they distributed? King's colour to one battalion and the regimental to the other? Or in a colour party between the battalions which seems a bit vulnerable? 3. When the battalions were together, did the 2nd battalion's grenadiers deploy on their left flank as I have seen suggested. 4. What is the best book-source for information on the Portuguese Army and its unit organisation? Any help appreciated. |

Hi see "Portuguese line battalion mystery" at TMP link The very last entry I posted includes the diagram link of how the regiment of 2 battalions was aligned in line. You are correct grenadiers at either end of the line. Each battalion carried 1 colour – see exchange TMP link 1st battalion carried the "Bandeira Real" or Royal Standard; the 2nd battalion carried the "Bandeira Regimento" or Regimental Colour. The multicoloured flag was the Royal standard whilst the plain coloured one was the regimental standard. Colours were in the centre of the regiment whether in line or column of march – see above diagram. On Portuguese Army – Rawkins has a useful CD or have a look at my contribution at TotalWarCenter Forum link Certainly sometime before Salamanca, the 21st had 2 battalions… |
