The summer sandwich I grew up eating: Voileipiä -- multiple small open-faced sandwiches with butter (that's voi; leipiä is the bread), smoked salmon, sliced cucumber, mild cheese, mustard, and whatever creative additions and substitutions you like. Ham, salami, stronger cheeses, slices of apple, slices of tomato, mashed avocado all work well. This is the unofficial national dish of Finland, eaten all year round at any time of day, but especially in warm weather and between sessions of relaxing in the sauna. Serve with good beer, or good coffee, depending on the mood. The Danish dish called smørrebrød was probably derived from voileipiä. |

I'm amazed that the French Dip isn't listed, while some other much poorer options are. Perhaps caving to the PC crowd. A good bacon burger ranks right up there, as does a steak sandwich too. Ham, fried in bacon fat (or butter – not quite as good), and served on a buttered, toasted French or sourdough roll is superb. Add cheese if you must, but I like it plain. Not a Philly, since it doesn't require cheese, but a pepper steak sandwich is delicious too – strips of grilled steak with soy sauce, onions, and green bell peppers served on a butter-toasted french, or sourdough roll. A good barbecue chicken sandwich is delicious. For the seafood realm, a fried cod, or grilled tuna steak sandwich are both very good too. Hard to choose from the above, but if pressed, I think I'd go with the pepper steak sandwich with soy sauce, though a really good burger, steak sandwich, or French Dip are right in there too. |

The muffelletta sandwich from the Central Grocery in New Orleans is the best I've ever eaten. |

A good bacon burger ranks right up there Agreed. My favorite airport sandwich is a veggie burger with bacon and cheese. It tastes great and is much less heavy than a beef burger, so it will fill me up just enough for sitting on an airplane. |
