I'm intrigued by the new ruleset "Never Mind the Billhooks", but as the eyesight isn't what it used to be, I plan to do this in 28mm. I plan to use 20mm bases for the infantry, but have no idea what to use for the Cavalry. Will 20mm work for the infantry? And what size base should I use for the Cavalry? Thanks, |

Will 20mm work for the infantry? All my 28mm WOTR infantry are based 20mm per figure frontage. And what size base should I use for the Cavalry? Whatever suits the figures you have. |

Thanks. I was hoping to order the Cav bases at the same time as the figures (Mix of Perry and Front Rank). So what size do you use? or do you change the base upon the size of the figure? |

Most rulesets that use 20mm for close order infantry allow 25mm for close order cavalry. Many horse models are too wide for 20mm especially once the rider is mounted. Lighter or skirmish cavalry can be based on 30mm frontages. As long as both sides are similar it doesn't matter too much. |

I have some Perry mounted figures 3 to a base 60mm wide and as deep as necessary. I have some mounted archers and hobilars that are not based yet. I may well put them 2 to a 60mm wide base. YMMV. |

Whatever suits the figures you have I like 1" (25mm) fender washers for infantry. The metal gives them a bit of heft (for plastics) and the extra 5mm over 20mm adds stability and makes them a bit easier to line up (no limbs overlapping base) For cavalry, 1" by 2" metal bases fit every horse (and camel) I have so far. Oval or round bases would start to get pretty big For my English Civil War, I changed this up a bit. used magnetized bases 1"x1" for foot and 1"x2" for mounted from shogun miniatures. These bases have great magnetic material, glued to an abs upper Of course, this is all for individually mounted figures. My 28mm forces are all intended for "skirmish" size actions – basing individually allows a wider variety of rules to be used John |

Thanks John. I use 1" fender washers for skirmish games, but thought the 3/4" washers would work better for closed up ranks. Plus I was going to use fitted movement trays. I used two 1" washers set side by side for my Shogun horse, but I don't think that will work that easily with movement trays. I like your idea on basing the Cav. I also like your idea of a constant basing so that they fit a wider variety of rules. |
