There but for the grace of God go I. In 1968 I graduated from USN radioman school. The orders for our class trickled in until only two of us were left. Our orders arrived on the same day: I went to a submarine rescue ship in Pearl Harbor and he went to a swift boat squadron in Vietnam. I guess I threw double sixes and he threw double ones.

So you trained to dive to depths where your vessel could have been crushed like an eggshell, if it had done so the atmosphere inside would instantly ignite and the only rescue vessel if you got into trouble was….err you? Sounds scary to me, indeed anything involving water deeper than 4ft is scary to me.

Often wondered, how did the Brown Water Navy crews actually do? I imagine the "Apocalypse Now" type PBR crews took high casualty rates. But the heavy duty stuff, the armoured barges basically with the massive plating on the sides and turrets must have been (almost) impervious.

The only real danger was going bar-hopping in the Philippines and getting mugged. The guys who went down in the rescue bell were way above my pay grade.
