I've got some things I'm happy with for my medieval/renaissance/fantasy massed battles. What would you recommend for proper skirmishes just one grade up from RPG? The sort of thing you'd want for jailbreaks, kidnaps, rescues or making off with the paychest? Minimal bookkeeping is a plus. Thanks. |

My go to for this kind of thing is Two Hour Wargames. They are sold by Rebel Minis now but the one for this is Warrior heroes (just drop out the magic for historicals). link Lion Rampant / Dragon Rampant is fast and silly. I've got a set for Border Reivers called "Dish of Spurs" that might suit (just get rid of the guns). PM me or mark@scalecreep.com and I'll send it to you. |

There's a whole host of free rules sets here, including a good dozen or so medieval skirmish rules; perhaps something here is to taste: link |

Song of Blades and Heroes. I haven't played as much lately because I'm doing larger skirmish these days with Age of Fantasy from One Page Rules. I think SoB&H is a better ruleset, but I'd rather play AoF with lots of figures and very fast and simple play. (SoB&H is also simple, and very elegant in my opinion. Just doesn't handle the size I like.) There is also Age of Fantasy Skirmish, also from One Page Rules. It might be fine, though I haven't done it. I think you'd have to add your own objectives to steal the treasure or kidnap or jailbreak, rather than using its standard objectives. But it is pretty customizable. The One Page Rules games are free. onepagerules.com andy |

The GW Lord of the Rings rules do a fair job of that "between 6 and 50" figure game. |

I use "Pig Wars" for Ancient & Midieval skirmishing. |

Knights, pikes and swords is a great set with some interesting mechanics. Pig wars is also great, as mentioned above. |

I would recommend you see if you can locate a hard copy of BattleSystem Skirmishes, published by TSR. It is basically 2e AD&D, with highly simplified combat. For example, a 15th Level Fighter has typically 15 Hits; combat resolution is fast, but it retains all of the other aspects of the RPG. Cheers! |

Our club has been using modified Fistful of Lead Core Rules by Wiley Games along with elements from his other rule sets. A dedicated Medieval/Fantasy rule set is due out shortly. The original rule set was a western gunfight set with all the scenarios you have listed. link game report. link

The ancient Chainmail rules will work, if you can find a copy for a reasonable price. Many of those on eBay are listed for crazy prices. |

I've tended to prefer Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes, though the normal version works as well. |

If you want it just one step up from RPG, consider what Sgt Slag said, Or.. If you have a RPG you like just modify it. Im a fan of Battlesystem, but while I do have the Skirmish rules, I havent played the Skirmish rules. From my reading of them, they are basicly just the 2nd edition ADnD rule but replacing HP from the RPG with the HD. So its halfway between the RPG and the Battlesystem Rules (white are great) If you know or play Basic Dnd or 1st or 2nd edition Dnd, Just use those rules, eliminate HitPoints with HitDice, have Weapons do 1 HD worth ( or equivealent) amount of Damage. and you have one of the best Sets of Skirmish Rules you can come by. Since it is Skirmish, you dont have to worry about Formations and such, but you have stats for any monster or soldier whether real or imagined at your fingertips. While I havent played the old Chainmail rules, they actually should work quite well, once you figure out the the writing style, although its probably best suited for something slightly larger then skirmish. But in reality, the 1st edition Ad&D rules, are probably best set or rules you could use, as once I figured out recently what I have actually known but didnt realize it since I aquired it in the year it was published, was that Ad&d was the Wargame with the RPG added, and it is from what I have seen of other systems the most complete yet easily played system you could use for any thing from a simple RPG to Skirmish game, to moderate sized Campaign system, if you would just use HD instead of HP. Its all there if you have a DMG, PHB, and Monster Manual, including the kitchen sink if you need it, and want to use it. |
