Interesting. I've never heard of "Irregular Wars". Is there anyone out there who's played them? What are the basic mechanics, and do you like the rules? If you can, how do they compare to say, "Muskets and Tomahawks" or "Blood and Plunder"? |

I've played them quite a bit. Much different game than either M&T or B&P. They are designed for the conflicts during the age of discovery in the new worlds although the army lists also cover European conflicts.. There are army lists for anything ranging from meso-americans empires, Mississippi mound builders, Huguenot adventurers, conquistadors, African kingdoms, sultans of Malay, etc. Army sizes are variable but about 8-12 bases or so. Each base represents a company of soldiers or warriors (about 25 or so) and they have a resolve level. Different types of troops have special characteristics. Combat is straight forward with lists of modifiers. The goal is to break the resolve of your opponent's companies. One base is your lord and he has a command range, bases outside of the range will do things on their own (advance, withdrawal, nothing). Blackpowder weapons can cause fear among natives but can't be fired if it's raining that turn and archaic weapons fire with a negative modifier. In a lot of ways it's similar to Peter Pig's original AK47 rules, there are pre deployment rolls to see if units have poor morale, or have illness. There is a good amount of friction. I'm a big fan and I like how they depict these small engagements of the period when armies weren't always professional or orderly. |
