… Wight To End 'Suspected Hijacking' "The Special Boat Service retook an oil tanker off the Isle of Wight coast in just seven minutes after reports of 'Nigerian stowaways' on board becoming violent and 'threatening the crew'. Crew members reportedly sought shelter in a safe room on the Liberian-registered oil tanker, named the Nave Andromeda, which was due to arrive at Southampton at 10.30am. The Special Boat Service landed 16 personnel aboard the vessel via air and sea following a ten-hour standoff, with two Royal Navy Merlin helicopters and two Wildcats also used in the operation, Sky News reported…" YouTube link Main page link

Good to hear. I wonder if at least some of the SBS used those neat Iron-Man-like, flying suits they've been testing out. Seems like those would be a bit stealthier than using helos. Does British law still permit/require the hanging of pirates? I imagine re-instituting that policy, if it does not, might go quite a ways to discouraging this sort of behavior in the future, and if not, it is almost 100% effective at curing recidivism. |

I'm kind of torn. On the one hand I'm glad it went well, but if you register your ship in Liberia then why isn't it Liberia's job to come and rescue you? |

Obviously the Nigerians were unaware of how the British deal with pirates. Do you guys still have gibbets hanging around? :) |

I'm kind of torn. On the one hand I'm glad it went well, but if you register your ship in Liberia then why isn't it Liberia's job to come and rescue you? It looks like it was in UK waters so our jurisdiction. I'm guessing an apparently hijacked oil tanker in the hands of unknown persons of unknown intent would likely make the security services a little twitchy! If not that I can't imagine the coast guard would be terribly happy with a hijacked vessel potentially blundering around the one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes. |

Many ships registered in Liberia for tax reasons. I always laugh when I hear politicians say they are going to raise taxes on the rich. The rich aren't stupid, they'll just take their money offshore and it is you and I who end up paying. |

Apparently France and IIRC Spain both refused the tanker port entry to offload its uninvited passengers prior the 'hijacking'…. |
