For most of her career the 80-gun Tonnant class, Le Formidable was a flagship in the French Mediterranean Squadron based at Toulon.

Seeing action at both battles of Algeciras in 1801 and the battles of Cape Finisterre, Cape Trafalgar and Cape Ortegal in 1805, perhaps her crowning achievement was to sail into Cadiz under the command of Captain Amable Troude, later dubbed the French Horatius by Naopoleon, to rapturous applause from a waiting crowd that had witnessed her fight off shore.
