the us 1950s + had m55 quad 12.5mm and m42 dusters 40mm for mobile anti aircraft defence (numbers transferred to a number of nato allies as well)

Thunderbird (Army) and Bloodhound (RAF)3.7 gun still operated late 50s, possibly into the 60s.

According to this (p.28), the 40mm towed Bofors was the only light AA weapon in BOAR in the 1950-60s.

There were plans to equip AA units with Green Mace guns ( link ), but after it had reached the prototype stage, it was scrapped in favour of the ‘Thunderbird' missile system.

It was the size of a large bus, and was loaded from two rotary magazines. It fired 96 rpm … and its magazines ran out after 20 seconds of firing!

Never heard of the Green Mace system, sounds an absolute beast, though needing a crane and 10-15 minutes to replace the magazines doesn't sound very practical!

Not surprising, since the USA and West Germans used a twin 40mm on the M42 Duster, until the latter developed the Gepard.

A pity we didn't buy, or copy that design. Heck, even twin 40s mated to a decent radar FC system would have worked wonders.
