So what is the subject? They appear to be using Henry rifles. |

The print is called "Degress' Battery." It depicts the 66th Illinois retaking the battery of 20 pound Parrott Rifles during The Battle of Atlanta (July, 1864}. Those are indeed Henry repeaters. |

Do Henry rifles take bayonets? |

It appears the rifle sporting the bayonet is in the background and is not the Henry. |

No, the Henry was not issued a bayonet. But as a 16 shot repeater, it's doubtful an enemy armed with a single shot muzzle loader would be able close with a unit bearing them. |

This is a future project for my company. Does any one know how they carried their cartridges?? |

Just started looking for an answer of how the cartridges were carried, and found this Wikipedia article about the regiment: link No help with the cartridges How did the Berdans, with Henry's carry theirs? Here is a reenactor carrying loose cartridges in conventional Union bullet poucn: YouTube link Here is another video of a soldier pulling two cartridges as a time, and dropping them into the loading tube. Must not have had other way: YouTube link GdeP |

Same Wikipedia entry: A full discussion of the Sharpshooters combat record during this period is not feasible due to the sheer number of actions involved with their exceptional service during the July 22, 1864 "Battle of Atlanta". On that day, they fought in three different actions, separated by over three miles of battlefield. Standing in open ground they helped break-up an attack on the XVII Corps front, and then maneuvered to turn back a breakthrough in the XV Corps area…over two miles away. During the second action, the Sharpshooters, under the acting command of Capt William S. Boyd, participated in the recapture of DeGress Battery of the 1st IL Lt Arty. |

Amusing exchange on the Bayonet & Henry, correctly resolved. The chance of Troiani portraying a Henry with a bayonet are considerably below zero!🤣 |

Bilby notes that only around half of the 66th were armed with Henrys, these being private purchase. However, he also quotes Sword, saying that they expended 83,500 rounds in the Campaign, which suggests they must have had some serious bags to tote 300+ rounds of .44 rimfire per man. Although, I suspect not all at once. 😉 |
