"The commander of the U.S. military's nuclear forces recently acknowledged that no one knows if using low-yield or tactical nuclear weapons will trigger a full-scale nuclear war.

Ever since the Cold War, commanders have considered whether it is possible to conduct a limited nuclear war. That's why the United States developed "tactical nuclear weapons," which were originally conceived to be used against specific troops and installations instead of completely destroying the other side…"

The question gets even more nuanced at sea where there is much reduced potential for collateral damage. If your submarine was sunk by a low-yield nuclear depth charge vs. a conventional homing torpedo do you escalate?

Gay bomb, who came up with that idea?

In the 1970-80s we trained to fight in a nuclear and chemical environment. Being in tanks and M113s prep consisted of taking down scopes and protecting sights. Turning the tank and turret away from the blast area. A good practice run would take about 5 minutes. Taking gas masks off and rubber gloves were last.

Troops did not mind nuclear but hated chemical areas.

Tac Nukes … yep … I had the additional duty of being a Bn Atomic Demolition Missions Officer, requiring a TS Clearance, and few days training from, '82-'83. As a 1LT with an Air Assault Bn in the 101. link

Soviet doctrine called for tactical nukes to be placed under the control of the theater commander, so it would have been feasible for a Soviet four-star general to attack using nukes on his own initiative. There would have to be a number of conditions met, such as an overwhelming enemy force or entrenched resistance that could not be broken through conventional means.

Just try to convince the Other Side that they're "just tactical nukes".
Sure. That will work.

Yes, IIRC the USSR nukes on Cuba during the Missile Crisis in '62, the Gens on the ground had launch authority. But fortunately nobody started tossing nukes around and start Armageddon, Ragnorok, etc.,.
