My understanding is that contemporary writers noted her charm, wit, intelligence, humour, knowledge, grace, etc. Absent was any reference to her beauty or physical appearance. Obviously, this doesn't imply she wasn't beautiful. They might not have felt the need to comment on her looks. The phenomenon of looks being the only quality that matters is a very modern thing.
