There was concern that Moscow's influence might collide with London's. Another major actor in Africa, Paris, became alarmed in 2018 as Russian Wagner and GRU security consultants started to appear in political circles in countries such as the Central African Republic, Eritrea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Libya alongside Khalifa Haftar's troops. In Libya, Russian security forces reportedly suffered heavy losses in the battle for Tripoli…"

Yes but so far their involvement has been unsuccessful.Wagner and all these groups have failed on all fronts. |

My guess is they are trying to recoup their former "glory" from back in the day, when they were a major player on the continent, and a huge supplier of weapons, but that was a very, very, long time ago. 1960s and 1970s seem to be the high-point of their involvement there. |

Yes … they/Putin are still pining for the good old days … But the Russians are nothing like they were during the Cold War of the '60s & '70s, etc. Of course that won't stop them from trying. |
