"Textron Systems announced Thursday that it will deliver an all-electric version of its M5 Ripsaw Robotic Combat Vehicle prototype to the U.S. Army for experimentation next year. Earlier this year, the Army selected a Textron team to develop its subsidiary Howe & Howe's unmanned vehicle for the service's Robotic Combat Vehicle, or RCV, Medium platform. The Army wants to develop a light, medium and heavy version of the RCV to give commanders the option of sending unmanned vehicles into combat against enemy forces…"

Now that was just designed so that eyes and teeth could be painted on it, right?!! |

It looks a bit WWII with the suspension system and rivets on the turret!

M5? Wasn't that the computer in Star Trek TOS that went bonkers and killed a lot of innocent people…? |

That's an awful big turret for such a little gun, and that bogie and track systems looks very archaic. |

From the article…the Exec said: "We are really on the precipice of seeing advancement in electric technologies throughout the military," LOL. A rather unfortunate choice of wording! Or, maybe, somebody relied too much on a computer to 'write' a clever sounding plug! Also…Have they never heard of 'Shot Traps' ? I rather like the look of the thing, though. Reckon some guys could have a load of fun with these on exercises! |

Easy to counter. Just send it bogus 'software updates' in the middle of a battle, and it will shut down while trying to upgrade… ;-) |

A .50 cal sniper rifle could neutralize and/or immobilize that in short order, I suspect. Hand and rifle grenades may once again regain popularity for dealing with "tanks" like this. Heck, even a paintball gun could blind it, since I don't see a windshield or other type of wiper on those sensor lenses. |

Depending on how good its optics and image recognition systems are – not sure I'd want to get close enough to try the paintball idea or possible even snipe at it with a .50 cal… Frankly surprised the thing doesn't have way more obvious cameras – given picket duty or reconnaissance would seem to obvious tasks for such a vehicle. |

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa, Given the range of a .50 cal sniper rifle, my bets are on the sniper. |

Truth be told … I'm pretty sure what we see there is unclassified. |

Given the range of a .50 cal sniper rifle, my bets are on the sniper. For the moment… Though that may in part because there still seems to a certain amount of queasiness about letting software kill people without a human being involved in the decision! If I was developing this stuff I'd be taking endless hours of multi-spectral footage of soldiers on exercise and then training the 'aim bot' algorithms on them. |
Legion 4 | 14 Oct 2020 8:51 a.m. PST |
Yes, a .50 Sniper Rifle and a vast plethora of AT weapons on the battlefield can KO an AFV. The same can be said about all the weapons that can KIA or WIA Infantrymen … But we know as tech evolves so do tactics, techniques. procedures and training. Sometimes e.g. in the ACW and WWI it took a little time and an lot blood to figure it out, sadly. |
