I game at the "semi skirmish" scale.
Mostly raids, skirmishes, occasionally going as crowded and dense as Bennington and Cowpens.
And to me, with single figures on bases, the figure:man ratio is flexible.
So, these would see little use in a Monmouth or Brandywine game.

So, in the South, we see that the 76th Regiment, Highlanders, had a mounted company, as did the 80th.
There are many other examples.
Note that in this case I do NOT consider Light Dragoons "mounted infantry". They acted as light cavalry.

I want dudes who ride up to investigate the notorious scalawag and bushwhacker Jamie Fraser and his infamous witch wife Clare.

I want a figure wearing a short "Highland jacket". Obviously this late in the war, the full skirted 1768 Warrant coat with full skirts and turnbacks is obsolete. Obviously not a kilt. Boots, maybe.
His arms would primarily be a musket, but he might have a sword. The MI of the 71st apparently did.
I would prefer a plumed slouch hat, but a tricorne would be OK. In any event, I can do head swaps with Kings Mountain heads, including the Highland bonnet.

Several mounted militia ranges out there are rather nice, I have them. But I prefer them to be wearing a recognizable uniform.
Any and all suggestions appreciated.

During the occupation of Philadelphia, the British made much use of mounted light infantry men. Although I think most of their fighting was done on foot. I jus did a quick search of figure that could be used as a base to convert. Very little out there in 28mm. The Perry British Dragoon "southern" dress is a maybe. If I was going to do it, I would want a figure in a round about jacket (Queen Rangers ?) to start with.

How do Fife and Drum figures compare to Kings Mountain? As F&D appear to be the best choice to make mounted LI from.

Is my memory correct in that some infantry in the South were mounted on mules?

Maybe take a Queens Ranger mounted figure and do a head transplant?

From memory, the Hinchliffe X Range dragoon was light on gear. How about grabbing a box of Perry plastics to do a hat swap and add a slung musket? So long as you have a decent pair of clippers you should be able make something good enough for the table! The Warlord plastics have a lot of spares in, like muskets and swords, so they might be worth looking at.

The painting of the Battle of Paoli shows British mounted troops wearing short jackets and broad brim round hats. They are armed with sabers. I believe for this engagement mounted LI were used in addition to the Dragoons. Could the said mounted troops be these LI?
