Mean to be an ümlaut (although reduntant with the 'ae' spelling)? I am mildly puzzled when I see this undeniably pleasing vignette set turn up from time to time, since as far as I'm aware the 'wall-gun' with mantlet mounted on limber wheels, which is represented in a manuscript dated ca.1783 drawn up at Woolwich by Wm Congreve senior, illustrates a proposed method of ferrying guns in opposed landings or river crossings, with the heavy calibre muskets providing fire support. There seems to be no indication that this projected arrangement, perhaps inspired by De Saxe's 'amusette' drawings, actually saw the light of the day as equipment supplied to the Royal Artillery- let alone the Queen's Rangers during the AWI. |
