Twas ever thus when the French and British faced each other in an open field at close range. "For the French will stand stand fire at a distance- though 'tis plain they cannot look men in the face." Words of a veteran of Dettingen, but equally applicable here. Montcalm's European experience had been against the Austrians in Italy. If he'd been at Dettingen or even Fontenoy- he might have thought twice about his bold plan. |
