"Turns out Beetle Bailey had it right all along. The loafing comic-strip Army private has been sleeping on duty for 70 years, to the frequent fury of his platoon sergeant. But on Wednesday, the Army released new guidelines for optimal soldier performance — and they include strategic and aggressive napping. The recommendation is part of an overhaul of the Army's physical fitness training field manual, which was rebranded this week as the FM 7-22 Holistic Health and Fitness manual. No longer is the guide focused entirely on grueling physical challenges like long ruck marches and pull-ups. Now it has chapters on setting goals, visualizing success, "spiritual readiness" and, yes, the art of the nap…"

When you're tired, you will nap anywhere. I know. Been there, done that. |

I once "napped" behind the wheel on a twenty mile trip. Highway Hypnosis, it's called. Scary feeling when you come back to consciousness. |

All my friends in that have been in the military can sleep at the drop of a hat and can sleep anywhere. One of them even fell asleep standing up but perhaps that was just his comment on our discussion? Another trait they all have is the wolf down food in seconds, I doubt they even get the pleasure of tasting it. This is fine if they are in the field on exercise it a bit embarrassing in a restaurant. |

We were on guard duty way too often – each other day, so I could sleep amywhere and almost in every pose. I've seen some guys sleeping while standing – there was a guard post near the unit banner, the only one within a building…so while your comrades were freezing outside you could take strategic nap. 30 years later it doesn't work for me anymore, unfortunately… |

When you're tired, you will nap anywhere. I know. Been there, done that. Yep, in many cases guys would "nap" anyway. I guess the Army wants it to be more "organized".🥱🤔 |

When you live a "hurry up and wait" lifestyle, you catch what naps you can. |

I just have this picture of some drill sergeant shouting " On the command SLEEP! You will fall on your back with arms by your side, wait for count of 3 them close your eyes, wait count of three, then inhale. Now, SLEEP two three, EYES CLOSED, two three Inhale….. " |

Ha, I've been doing that for decades. Got it down pretty well too. Maybe I should sign up to be an "instructor". |

@Thresher01: Instructor, hell, let's make a presentation to sell our services as nap consultants! |

Never stand when you can sit. Never sit when you can lie down. And if you can lie down, sleep. As quoted by my drill sgt in 1990 Robert |

but never leave your rifle leaning against a wall, even if unloaded. "chinstrapped" -being that tired you are only being held up by your chinstrap. |

Never stand when you can sit. Never sit when you can lie down. And if you can lie down, sleep. We were saying something like that even in the '80s as well ! |

We were saying something like that even in the '80s as well ! I believe that it actually dates back to the training material for Roger's Rangers. |

I have slept through Artillery bombardment, not at me but over me. Also on the floor of airplane hangars while waiting to load up for a jump, through a hurricane while on the side of a mountain in GA, and even while marching. Sleeping standing up is beginner level napping. |
