The attrition rates are actually quite large given the sizes of the forces involved. This has also been the case in Syria, Yemen and Libya It does raise serious questions for tokenistic NATO forces. If you're whole army is a mere two brigades with maybe 30 tanks and 24 artillery pieces, how long can you expect whatever is deployable to last in a peer level conflict? |
Thresher01 | 30 Sep 2020 8:57 p.m. PST |
Less than 24 hours, I suspect, unless you are really, REALLY good at hiding them from the enemy. Of course, 30 tanks is more like two companies worth or armor, not two BRIGADES. |

f course, 30 tanks is more like two companies worth or armor, not two BRIGADES. No that's two brigade all up including infantry! The usual set up for many NATO partner states seems to involve two brigades: 1. Heavy brigade – with an armoured "battalion" and 2 mech infantry battalions in IFV. 2. Light brigade – with 3 motorised infantry battalions in light wheeled APCS or even MRAPS Note these brigades are often missing key components such as artillery, air defence, reconnaissance, NBC etc (these are usually pooled centrally). |

Yea, I get the names they're calling some units now, but I'm going with the more "real world" olde skool definitions, since I'm a dinosaur. |

Armenian footage of an apparent Azeri retreat. Armenians are using heavy artillery: youtu.be/fPw1rq9vdps Armenians have been shelling at least one Azerbaijani city ( Ganja ) and have apparently also threatened use of Iskander-E short range ballistic missiles. I also read unconfirmed reports that multiple Il-76 flights have been detected from Israel to Azerbaijan to restock supplies of suicide drones and other equipment. It is known that Israel had previously supplied these systems to Azerbaijan. It is indicative of how insane Israeli policy is these days = they are selling weapons to a key Turkish ally despite its growing differences with Turkey ( no doubt some of those Harop and Orbiter suicide drones have ended up in Turkey for reverse engineering ) ! |

Azerbaijan is now shelling Armenian city of Stepanake. Judging by the footage it is indiscriminate shelling and use of cluster munitions against civilian targets has been confirmed (footage of a strike on a suburban street). Also on the Twitter sphere there have been photos of soldiers with Grey Wolf insignia in Azerbaijan. Grey Wolves are a Turkish paramilitary group originally formed as a "stay behind" unit under NATO's operation Gladio and who have since been involved in a number of atrocities and terror attacks. Their links to the Turkish government are murky but they have been used both internally and externally to push Turkish interests. It seems that Sultan Erdogan definitely has his finger in this pie.
Russia on the other hand is strangely staying largely quiet.
As to reasons why, following article discusses possibilities. link
Personally I think the Russian focus is on Belarus which is far more critical than the decades old conflict in the Causcasus. And interesting commentary on Russia's patience with Turkey:
link With interference and belligerence in Libya, Syria, Greece and now Armenia, Turkey has without a doubt become an even more destabilising force in the greater middle east/Mediterranean area than even Iran. |

Looks like another bloody mess in that region with a number of players. And the Turks still look like NATO can't really trust them if it came down to it. As they become less secular and get more religion, per se … |
