Has anyone tried basing a 15mm army for Hail Caesar? I'm curious…what size bases did you use and how many minis per base did you go with (yeah, I know basing is flexible and I can do whatever I want. Still curious to hear what you did).

Thanks for any tips.

DBA bases were used here:

We routinely play with 4 stands of DBA based troops to a unit. Then we play at 2/3 scale for movement and weapons ranges.

We cut movement trays and then just dropped whatever we had on the trays. Most of our troops were on 40mm frontage as that's a nearly universal ancients basing system in 15mm. We went with "standard units" with a 160mm width. If we didn't have enough of one troop type we'd just "fill in" with anything that looked remotely close.

Best part of Hail Caesar is that it doesn't matter what scale or how you figs are based as long as both sides do it the same way.
For Hail Caesar, I use the following for a standard unit of infantry 4 bases each 40x30mm.

Thanks all. Interesting suggestions.

I play it all the time with 10mm armies.

As an aside, I'm exploring doing the battle of Sekigahara 1600 with the HC rules.

Both armies at the battle contain about 80k troops and are primarily made up of Samurai Cav and Foot Spear as well as Ashigaru Spear, Bow & Arquebusiers.

Now ive just gotta figure out what ratio my figures and units will be.

Thanks again.

40mm front. 1 stand tiny 2 stand small, 3 stand standard, 4 stand large. We almost always play 15mm. Ranges are never changed. Standard table is 5x8.

After a long wargame hiatus I'm going to use 15mm Sumer armies with 8cm frontages for standard units and 40mm for small. Am currently rebasing to double ranks same as ADLG because i like the way that looks. Will use 10cm=6inches for ranges and movement.

"Best part of Hail Caesar is that it doesn't matter what scale or how you figs are based as long as both sides do it the same way."

I've often seen this said for various rules systems across various periods. I personally think it's a bit of a marketing dodge by the writers. Anyone can decide the rules will suit them because they won't have to rebase. In reality it ghettoises players or groups of players.

It's not that hard, in these days of MDF laser cutting, to create unit bases to drop multiple bases from a different rules into a larger base or, of course, use magnetic bases to create bigger multiples.

I don't really see "it doesn't matter … how your figures are based" as a feature as much as a bug.

Cheers,
John

I think with with Hail Caesar it was a deliberate design goal. In the intro to either them of Black powder the writers were saying that their figures were all based differently and so needed to come up with a set of rules that allowed them to use them together.
