I thought that they retained their shields when using slings, (no shield holders required), but that they would need to go into a more open formation.

Might be hard to put the stone in the sling with one hand holding a shield?

I suppose you could just lean it up against your knee when reloading.

I have read the Roman EIR shields had "fatigue straps" but I am not sure of the archaeological evidence behind such a statement.
