Having recently discovered that Irregular Miniatures has a mounted BashiBazouk more compatible with my existing Blue Moon collection than Peter Pigs'lovely but diminutive offerings I have been reinspired to work on my Sudan collection.

Can anyone suggest a 15mm compatible steam locomotive that would not look out of place in late 19th century Egypt/Sudan? The cow catcher on PP's version takes it out of the running.

If nothing specific for 15mm, would you choose TT (1:120) or HO (1:87) scale locamotives, flat cars, etc.? As it's really just a scenario prop, I don't want to spend a fortune. Actually, its the flat cars that will be the stars being fortified with sand bags and carrying troops, gatling etc. so I'm leaning HO.

Any/all comments will be welcome.

Cheers
Kent

TT is what you want. HO is seriously too big.

Thank you. That was the kind of answer I was hoping for; to the point. I think that would have the benefit of allowing me to use Peter Pigs' flat and passenger cars.

Definitely TT. Here's mine, all converted from Triang rolling stock (and the locomotive actually runs when the track is wired up)

Did some web searching to find:

Which give us the engine:
Sudan Dongola Class (4-8-0) or South African Class 7A (4-8-0)

‘Dongola' class engine of the Sudanese Desert Railway in 1898: Battle of Abu Klea on 17th January 1885 in the Sudanese War

Cape Government Railways 7th Class locomotives were also built for the Soudan Military Railway during Kitchener's campaign in Sudan.
When he arrived in the territory in 1895, he built a railway line, strictly for military purposes, running parallel to the Nile River for nearly 200 miles (322 kilometres) from Wadi Halfa to the Third Cataract at Kerma, and then another line from Wadi Halfa across 571 miles (919 kilometres) through the Nubian Desert to Atbarah and on to Khartoum to the south.
For motive power, three Cape 7th Class locomotives, built to the Class 7A design and known as the Dongola Class in Sudan, were ordered from Neilson and delivered in 1897. These were followed by five more in two batches in 1898. They were initially not numbered, but named after places in Sudan.

The proper livery (color scheme would take more work)

Thank you all for your input. I found the articles very interesting reading and your suggestions were most helpful.

Dyehard, thank you for the link. That Russian locomotive looks close enough for me and it's not like any of my gaming buddies would know the difference anyway.
