I'm willing to give it a chance. |

I don't know… it looks good, but I think the Roman battle line was starting to charge helter skelter-like in one of the scenes. And if the Barbarians use Zulu chants and Roman cavalry goes charging through the woods, I'm out! |

Mjkerner- I'll give you my standard movie advice to TMPers: Never, ever watch any films or TV shows not set in the present. Also, even if it is set in the present, don't watch any that have anything military in them. You will just be disappointed. Better to simply watch Seinfeld re runs. |

Looks like it might be an interesting story of Hermann the German. |

It's not even in Latin! It does look good, though. |

Anyway, what is "historically accurate". Possibly only conjecture. This series may well be a bit of fantasy, but where is the harm in that? |

"It's not even in Latin!" Actually, it is—at least for the Romans! |

Octavian had lost whatever "cajones" he once had by then. There were some 60 legions at the end of the civil war, of which he disbanded over half -- obviously most of those had fought for Anthony. So, he could have enrolled ten "temporary" legions, and sent them to cover "quiet sectors," while amassing ten "veterans" to add to the six or so hurriedly assembled under Germanicus. With an army of 16 legions plus auxiliaries from Gaul and Spain (NO Germans!), and troops from client states, esp. Eastern archers, he should have had Germanicus cross the Rhine and burn Germania to the ground… Hhmmm. Might make an interesting war game campaign "what if!!??" |

What did you all think of that young German hottie leading the attack in the forest? |

What hottie? Insufficient data from a mere glimpse or two……. |

As much as we would love historical films and series to be as accurate as possible, we must remember that they are created with entertainment in mind firstly. They are not documentaries. I enjoyed watching the Alamo (yes, the one with John Wayne in) but after a little research I discovered that, in reality, the defenders had the larger calibre cannons and the film makers had invented the bit where the defenders destroy a large Mexican cannon, obviously for entertainment purposes. But I still just about enjoy the film. And who knows, if this one becomes popular and successful it might lead to more being made and hopefully one about Germanicus, the Battle of Idistaviso and the defeat of Arminius and the recovery of the lost eagles? That would be great. |
