But did he really say it? link |

Of course he said it. I said it in an elementary school production around 1970 or so, and I had a uniform that my mom sewed for me, as well as a plastic sword that I drew when I uttered the immortal words. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt, I say. |

So, his second in command, who was there, says he said it. Good enough for me. The distance in time is not really that long— the equivalent of recalling words from 1974 today. And given that it was a highly memorable event in the man's life— getting shot at repeatedly while on a burning, sinking ship is not something easily forgotten. Might the wording have been different, or emphasized in a different way? Certainly— even dramatic events can produce different recollections in different people. It's possible, in fact, that Jones uttered all the recalled phrases (or something like them) during the moment— some said to his officers, and others shouted across the gap of battle to the enemy. Hard to know, either way. So we fall back on the standard of the source was there, and we were not. The source wins. He said it. |
