This is actually important when evaluating the perennial (at least on TMP) question of militia vs Regulars. This was an expedition organized by New England militia, with help from the Royal Navy. These militia captured a French fortress, the key to the St Lawrence River, and took it from French regulars, in King George's War. There was a scenario in the French and Indian War book, Hanitants and Highlanders, put out by the Canadian Wargamers Group. It had a campaign map because of the varied possible New England Militia landing beaches. Among other things, it features Gorham's Rangers (RANGERS!!!) with artillery. The New England Militia took the fort, only to see nincompoop diplomats give it back in the peace negotiations for a few Belgian village lawmakers, and a mill. |

I never got around to it, myself. It was on my List. But I had to sell my armies for mortgage and food. |

They are militia. Call them up again, John. |

That was one of the great unheralded causes of the Revolution, in that it dramatically illustrated the tensions between colonies and mother country, in attitudes and expectations. The Brits simply didn't "get it" (no reason why they should have been expected to) and the eventual redefinition of the imperial relationship became unavoidable. |

I haven't gamed it, but the site is well worth a visit -- another superb Parks Canada presentation. |

The F & I period is wonderful for several reasons, but the fact you can have rangers of various units and uniforms has to be one of the best. The uniforms are amazing. |

I participated in a game of it using the computer moderated rules Carnage and Glory. I commanded some of the French. I cant say it was a particularly enjoyable experience. I laid an "effective bombardment" on advancing British for several turns until they stormed the ramparts and drove my troops off. |

Having walked the grounds dozens of times – it would seem the land component would be fairly basic. (seize the high ground & bombard from there) The only way I would think this would be an interesting/competitive game would be if the sea component would be more even or made more difficult for the British/Americans. Just my 2cents worth. |

My wargaming buddy Ed GM'd Louisburg or at least a portion of it. I had a hard time getting into the game because I was in awe of Ed's stonework, trenches, figures and vignettes. He built and painted all his terrain and figures. I am still in awe of his terrain. See for yourself in the last entry for September 2016. link |

It is a fascinating and historically significant event for all sorts of reasons, but tactical wargaming is not among them. |
