Magnificent work! It reminds me a bit of Stokesay Castle in Shropshire. |

That is a sweet build – reminds me of some of the English Heritage models and some of the Scottish border buildings I've been in. |

Beautiful. Is this a kit or scratch built? How did you manage to keep the mortar white? How did you achieve the mottled look on the stones and the roofs? It doesn't look like you painted each stone ( that is a horrific amount of work) but you nevertheless managed a very realistic effect. |

Not a kit. I built it from 1/4 plywood and I covered it in my own stonework sheathing. The stone corners are cut in ,sculpted with with epoxy putty and then carved. For the painting, spray paint overall. Take about 6 stone shades of craft paint and dab each colour over the model from darkest to lightest. Dry brush to blend. Cover with a dark wash. For mortar ,use spackle, mix in some tan, gray craft paint. Wipe it on the model, smooth out with a damp brush. Next use a wet brush to wipe off excess. When it's dry it will look overly white , wipe again with a wet brush. When dry , add some washes n small random areas. When satisfied, seal with a watered down mix of LePage white wood glue. Dries flat. |

built it from 1/4 plywood and I covered it in my own stonework sheathing This reminds of of the old style TV chefs, who would throw a few random ingredients into a pot, then open up the oven with "and here' one I made earlier I just cannot imagine carving that amount of stonework, tiles, doors, windows etc. Because I can't imagine it, I've never tried "Museum quality". Rubbish. I've never seen anything this good in a museum Thank you for posting, looking forward to the next one If you don't mind a couple of questions … How long did it take you to build this ? "Your own sheathing" How do you make that ? Are the roof tiles done in a similar way ? Thanks John |

Thanks for all the compliments guys. jwebster, thank you. As for building time I don't keep track. It takes the fun out of it. I picked away at it for a year also building other models as well. Sometimes you have to leave it to dry. It's only a hobby so part time hours. To make the sheathing, it's from a silicone mould I made. It starts by sculpting a master of the stonework. I have several different types of stonework. I have poured out plaster onto a board and carved stonework. I have also rolled out plastersine and pressed a stone pattern into it. From that I take a silicone mould In that mould I trowel in ready mixed latex ceramic wall tile adhesive reinforced with drywall mesh tape. When dry you have a sheet of stonework ready to glue on. The cornerstones are epoxy putty sculpted and carved. The roof tiling is the same method as the walls. Hope that helps. |
