I plan to collect generic forces for the Crimean (probably concentrating on British vs Russian). What would be the most useful figures to collect (other than line infantry)? What types of cavalry would be the most common on the Crimean battlefield (uhlans, cossacks, hussars, dragoons, etc)? Were guards and Highlanders heavily involved? Any other troop types I should include? I have ordered scenario books and wargaming guides but I'd like to figure out what figures I should be looking at? |

The Guards Brigade (Grenadier, Coldstream, and Scots) were at The Alma, Sevastapol, and Inkerman. The Rifle Brigade was at The Alma, Inkerman, and Sevastapol. The 93rd Highlanders were at Balaclava; the 42nd (Royal Highland) Foot (The Black Watch) were at Sevastapol. Re: cavalry… I think for the British pretty much every type was present at various battles, including Lancers, Hussars, Dragoons, and Guards. For a "generic" British army, in addition to line inf. you might want Foot Guards and both light and heavy cavalry of some kind, and a Highlander unit if you like. I'm no expert but for a "Generic" Russian army I think you'd want Guard and Line Infantry, and Cuirassier and Cossack cavalry. Plus guns for both sides. |

I would go with basic British infantry which took part in every action but my personal preference would be to go for the Turks who were fighting the Russians before the allies arrived and after they had stopped fighting or the French who had far more troops than the British had fought in a few other engagements that the British didn't. Apart from Balaklava the British cavalry didn't do much else except taking part in the recce sorties with the French and Turks from Evpatoria. There were no Russian guards or cuirassiers in the Crimea so I would go with lots of Russian infantry, Cossacks, Hussars and Dragoons. I hope this helps |
