dear all,
In Susane's Histoire de l'ancienne infanterie française, Volume 8, on page 71, an Irish regiment under a certain 'Rodrigh' is mentioned. It was supposedly raised (or ordered to be established) in August 1615, and was reduced already in May 1616. (Tessin also mentions the regiment in his book on regiments of the 'Ancient Regime'.

Does anyone know more about this regiment? The name 'Rodrigh' does not yield much after a search, and is probably the French spelling of a completely different name, but pronounced similarly (Roderick? Ludovick? Rodriquez? (none seem very Irish) )

In any case, any clue is highly appreciated.

Try searching for Rudraighe/Ruairidh/Ruairi/Ruaidhri

Irish spelling of Rory, in turn becomes Rodrigh through translation.

Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell perhaps?

Thanks!
I searched a bit further, and came upon a Rodrigo O' Donoghue. He is mentioned in 'Franco-Irish Military Connections' and 'British and Irish Emigrants and Exiles in Europe 1603-1688', with the note it is unclear whether it was a real regiment, or just a company.

Maybe Rodrigo = Rory, but unsure if Donaghue = Donnell? However, the 1st Earl of Tyrconnell died already in 1608. Could be a relative of course.

Not quite sure why I suggested Rory O'Donnell, must be my age catching up with me.

gathered with the Army in Normandy under the Maréchal d'Ancre Concini for his campaign in Picardy where he was the following month of september

Lilian, thank you. Belhomme is a great source of information on the French army.

Any clue who this Rodrigo O'Donoghue could be?
A captain of that name is given in John O'Neill's (future 3rd Earl of Tyrone) regiment in Spanish service (see Jennings' 'Wild Geese' page 6).
Given the 12 Year truce between Spain and the Republic (1609-1621), it is possible that some officers of the Spanish Army in Flanders sought employment elsewhere.
