What do you think what looks to be a mortar was used for?
AA, air to ground or just signals or flares?

360 MG tripod mount without gun installed?

Yes very likely, I have a tablet and while big enough it's not always possible to enlarge enough.

If that's a mortar, the barrel walls are thicker than the bore.

Even still, manning a mg on top a gas bag took nerves of steel

Not just ANY gas bag – one full of hydrogen!

A better feeling than being a sitting target with no MGs at all though.

No mortar. That is a 3rd tripod stand for another machine gun.

Shouldn't there be some better provisions for catching hot brass ejected from the guns…? <shudder>

Standing on top of a literal bomb, no parachutes, no gun shields. If those men had balls any bigger, you could see them from space.

"Oi, Eddie! What do you want to do after the war?"
"I'm thinkin' I want to go someplace safer and warmer, away from all this. Maybe the north pole, or the top of the Matterhorn."

PS: those semi-circular platforms look more disruptive than helpful. I feel like my footing is the last thing I'd want to be paying attention to while trying to aim an MG at a fast moving target – especially if the target is shooting back.
