Actually it is an IL-2M. The IL-2 had a pilot but no rear gunner. The IL-2M had rear gunner added and changed the main cannon from 20mm to 23mm.

Stalin came up with the idea with putting the gun for the rear gunner on springs so if the rear gunner is killed it would stay in a combat like position.

Have the models of both in my 1/300 scale.

IL-2M3 with the arrow wing
modified wingform to move the centre of lift back to match the change in CoG caused by adding the gunner.
